Egg Drop

We had so much fun today at our egg drop. Thank you so muh to everyone who participated.  The kids were so excited when a bunny was on the roof to drop the eggs.

This looke like it wasn't a far drop...right?

Wrong!

The kids screamed each time an egg was dropped.  They could not wait to get back in the room so we could open their packages and see if their egg had survived!

Each time I would open a package the kids would raise their hand if they thought the egg survived or if they thought it didn't.

You guys were very creative and did an awesome job!!!

Why is that sound long?

We decode words daily but might not know "why" we read some words the way we do. It's autumatic to us so when it comes time to teach our kids sight words or they coke to a word in a book they can't read, we just tell them the word or do the best we can.
Well here is the "rule" I taught today. I say "rule" because in the English language there is always an exception to the rule.

The CV phonics rule (Consonant Vowel) states that a reader can make a long sound at the end of a short word if it ends in a vowel.
For example: hi, he, she, me, so, go

In hem, the vowel is short because it's stuck in between two consonants (CVC).

In the word he, the e is able to stretch out and say his long sound (his name)

Same rule applies here...,

Get it?

Now there is always an exception - to, do, etc...

However we had fun learning this "rule" today. 😊

Rocks and Soil

This week we are learning about rocks and soil.

We are starting out very simple. We observed the rocks that were sent in.
Thanks  to Mrs. Kelly Munoz, one of our fabulous 5th grade teachers,  I began by using a USB microscope to examine a fee of my rocks. I will admit I was probably too excited about using this.

Then every set of partners received a magnifying glass to examine their rocks.

Next we wrote in our Rock and Science Journals.

Today we learned more facts about rocks.  We charted our new information.  Then, we used our Rock and Soil Journal and wrote 2 facts we learned about rocks.

Today we went on a search around the school to find items that were made out of rocks.  Then we came back and recorded our observations in our Rock and Soil Journal.

We talked about glass being made out of sand and sand is made from rocks so....glass is made out if rocks.  They were amazed!

We also went on a rock hunt.  They had so much fun being outside.

And someone wore the wrong shoes for hiking today...oops 😳

Today we examined our rock we found yesterday on our rock hunt.  We drew our rock and wrote words that described it and then wrote a few informational sentences about our rock.
