American Symbols- The White House

Today we learned about The White House.   We read two different informational books and the charted some of our favorite facts.

Then we wrote a fact about The White House and made our craft.  I was so glad I found this on http://www.busybeekidscrafts.com/Paper-White-House.html

George Washington did not get to live in The White House.

The White House is in Washington DC.

The White House has 132 rooms in it.
Our first president did not live in The White House.

Math Addition Strategies - Part Part Whole

Part part whole is our math graphic organizer.   We use this to determine if a word problem is addition or subtraction.  I ask "Do we know the parts or the whole?"  If we know the parts we are adding.  If we know the whole and one part we are subtracting. This helps the students realize that they can't use the key terms (the words more or less) and assume that they know the operation being used.

For example,

Lindsay had 6 black dogs and 2 brown dogs.   How many dogs did she have together?
This tells us we are missing the whole. Now we know we add. ___+___=___

Lindsay had  8 dogs.  2 dogs are brown and the rest are black.  How many black dogs are there?

This tells us we are missing a part. Now we know we subtract.   ___-___=___

American Symbols - the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell

We learned so many interesting facts about the Statue of Liberty.  We watched a video from United Streaming, took a virtual tour of the statue, and read an informational book about the Statue of Liberty.

Then we charted our facts.

We wrote our flags on our "torch" and illustrated the Statue of Liberty.

Next we read a book about the Liberty Bell, watched a United Streaming video, and liatened to an audio clip of a bell ringing (one that was cracked and one that wasn't)

Then we charted our facts.

Next, we wrote our favorite fact and made our own Liberty Bell. We even added a "crack" 😊

Math Addition strategies -unit bar

This week we are teaching the unit bar strategy.

The closing is always my favorite part!!! I love to watch them ask and answer questions.

American Symbols - The Bald Eagle

The Bald Eagle is another symbol for our county. We read and charted facts that we had learned.
Then we made an eagle with our hand prints wrote facts about the eagle.

Groundhog Day

We missed predicting for Groundhog Day because of the snow. I was sad but decided we could do it on Monday. I read Groundhog Gets a Say by Pamela Swallow and Groundhogs by Chadwick Gillenwater.

Then we charted facts about groundhogs. We talked about what it meant if the groundhog saw its shadow (6 more weeks of winter) and what it meant if the groundhog did not see his shadow (spring would come soon).

Next,  we made our predictions. We made observations about our graph. The children observed that... *15 students thought yes and 9 thought no *more people thought yes *they are not equal *both numbers are odd *24 students made a prediction

Next, we watched a video of Georgia's groundhog, General Beauregard Lee, make his prediction. He did not see his shadow! We colored, cut out, and sequenced the order of events for the groundhog too!

The last thing we did was our mystery picture! We made a groundhog!
