Veteran's Day

Today we learned about Veteran's Day. I showed them pictures of my friends and family are who are/were in the military.  We discussed what is a veteran and why we celebrate Veteran's Day. Then we wrote a thank you letter to a veteran.

 Our patriotism projects were amazing!  I loved seeing them and hearing each presentation. 

Bald Eagle and Statue of Liberty

We learned about 2 American Symbols this week,
The Bald Eagle and The Statue of Liberty.

We learned about why the bald eagle is called a bald eagle and why it was chosen to be the national bird for the United States of America.  We also looked at the Berry College Eagle cam and saw the male and female bald eagle making their nest.  I cannot wait until January and February to show them the eggs and when the bald eagles hatch!

We learned lots of facts about the Statue of Liberty also. They could not believe that it use to be brown so we took a few copper pennies and added vinegar to symbolize the rain and pollution from hundreds of years and watched them change from brown to green! We then wrote down 3 facts we learned.  I was so impressed!

Day and Night

We loved learning about day and night.  We learned about things that are in the sky during the  day and at night.  

We learned came up with lot of different facts that we knew and learned this week.

As we talked this week, we ldound out the 2 most important reasons we need the sun. 

 On Friday, I gave then solar bead bracelets.We talked about whe the light in the classroom did not make the beads change?  Will they chnage when we go outside?  As soon as we went outside the suns invisible rays made our clear beads turn colors! They were so excited!

When we cameback inside, the color started fading away.

 We read several books this week and also looked at the globe with a flashlight to show howthe sun can only shine on one side of the earth at a time so when it is day time here, it is nighttime on the other side of the world!

Pumpkin Day

Not only is it Halloween but it is also the 60th Day of school!  Zero the Hero brought us glow bracelets to wear !

Thank you to everyone who donated the items to make this day successful! 

We started out our day by estimating the circumference of a pumpkin.  Ashlyn had the closest estimation but no one was "just right"

Then we had our PUMPKIN TASTING! We tasted pumpkin bread, seeds, ice cream, butter, made pumpkin waffles, and made pumpkin pie in a bag (super easy recipe Pumpkin Pie in a Bag )

Next we predicted if our pumpkin would sink or float.  

They all  floated! It did not matter if it was small or big, smooth or bumpy!

Lastly, we stuck our hand in the pumpkin to clean it out.

 We decided how to carve it by seeing which set (of kids) was greater or less to vote for 

triangle or circle eyes

square or circle nose

3 or 5 teeth -then we decided which combination of 5 to use for the teeth (2 on top, 3 on bottom was our choice)
