15, 16, and M&Ms

Since it is Mm week we graphed M&Ms today.  We sorted them by color and then graphed how many of each color we had. Then as I walked around they had to tell me observations about the information on their graph (which one was free, greater, if any were equal, how many all together). Then we were able to EAT OUR DATA (the M&Ms)!!!!

We even made a minion as our muster picture!

Brown Day, mystery picture, Fly Guy

I love how the illustrations in our poetry journals have progressed.

We are continuing to complete mystery pictures using 59 charts.   This week is the letter N so we made a NEST.

I am drawing the place value for each number and we compose it then locate it on our chart and color it.

When you come in for conference week don't forget to stop by the media center and check out the book fair and look at all the book character pumpkins that are up for auction!
Our Fly Guy pumpkin turned out amazing!

50 Chart

And the mystery picture is....

Last week I just called out the numbers and they colored them in.  Today I drew the number in place value and then we found the number on the 50 Chart together and colored it in.
We composed each number (I drew it they had to figure it out) , then we would tell if it's odd or even and how many more it would need to get to the next 10.

For example in the picture above I drew one rod (10) and 6 singles(6).
Compose-16- decompose 10 and 6 more
16 is even because "no one is by themselves"  - We put our singles together in groups of two so we can easily see if a number is even or odd. Now we have to determine how many more to get to the next 10.  We practice this daily. If you have 6 you need 4.

The final result ? An APPLE (it is "Aa" week) with a worm coming out.

As you can see a very simple activity has a lot of learjing going on!  We even work in a little writing 😊.

More 50 chart fun!

F is for football AND FROGS! We used our 50 charts once again to reveal our mystery picture. I used the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives to build the numbers they were to color. Each number we built we discussed if it was even or odd, how many more we would need to get to the next 10, and decompose the number (41 would be 40 and 1 more). They turned out so cute!

50s Chart

To wrap up our week studying the letter M our mystery picture was a minion!   I loved creating this and the kids were SO excited when they realized what it was!

50 Chart

I love the 50 chart mystery pictures.  It isn't the 100 chart(those will come soon) but it gives them the opportunity to explore building and recognizing numbers at a smaller scale.  This week we are studying the letter N, so our mystery picture was a nest.   I show the numbers on the board using magnetic place value manipulatives.   I build the number and they tell me what number I built. Then we decompose the number (if the number is 34 they say 30 and 4 more), tell if it is even or odd, and how many more they would need to get to their next ten. There are so manny a-ha moments during these activities.

50 Chart

I am loving doing these with the kids on Fridays.   I call out numbers , the position in place value of a number, or decompose a number and the kids locate the number in their chart.  Each number or numbers or certain colors, when the finish, the "mystery number" is revealed!  This is great for number sense.   Each picture goes with our Saxon Phonics Letter of the Week.  Last week we created a pencil (I forgot to get a picture) and this week we created an apple with a silly worm coming out of it.  We will do these for a couple more weeks and then hopefully move to a 100 chart!!!!
