Math Station Fun!

We are loving working on addition and subtraction!

Station 1- SmartBoard- subtraction balloon pop (www.abcya.com)

Station 2 -iPads -KinderSub

Station 3-Bowling Subtraction
Students use bowling to write equations as they knock down cups.   (Ex 10-4=6)

Station 4- computer - Compass

Station 5- Domino Addition
Students choose a domino and write the equation to match the dots or copy the dots to help them solve the addition problem.

Station 6: Bears in the Cave
The first student draws 2 cards. They put the greatest number in the sum (answer) position and the other number in the first position (ex 4+__=9) while the 2nd student covers his/her eyes. The first student  uses one of their strategies to find out how many bears to put in the cave (under the cup). Studnet 2 then is able to "guess " how many bears are in the cave.

Station 7: Subtraction using 10 frames
The student draws an equation strip and places it on their 20 frame mat. They then use the lollipop pieces to represent and answer the equation.

Station 8:Using manipulatives to answer addition problems

Addition

We have been working hard on answering word problems.

Check out how we remember our standard!

Now I know what you are thinking. We did not solve our math problems like this when we were in school. But if you really think about it, we were told to do the even problems for class work , odd was for homework (and the answers were in the back of the book) , and we usually skipped the word problems.
Most of the time in life a problem isn't as black and white as 2+2. We have a problem and we have to decide what to do. Do we add, subtract, multiply, or divide?  How do we know which one to do? That is where word problems come in. If we teach students now how to dissect a problem and figure out what they are looking for, we are giving them a huge advantage.
If we look at our story problem and know the parts but don't know the whole amout, we will be using addition to solve our word problem.

We can use several strategies to then answer of story problem. We can draw a picture, use a ten frame, or a number line. Using more than one strategy allows us to double check our work and make sure we are correct!

Answering Story Problems using the Number Line

This week we are working on answering story problems using the number line.
When we place our lines on the number line, we do not start at 0 or 1.  Since we are practicing addition, we always start with the greatest number and then count on.

Addition

The way math has been taught has changed. It is less about memorization of facts and algorithms and more about the how and why.

Last week we discussed story problems and how to find out what information is important how to decide if we are adding or subtracting.
This week we are beginning addition. We use an organizer called part part whole to figure out if we know the the parts and the problem want to know how many more, how many altogether, how many in all, etcetera...
We then write the equation, draw a picture to help us determine our answer, fill in the equation and wrote an answer sentence.
I know what you are thinking...MY KINDERGARTNER CAN SO WHAT?!?!
Yes they can!

We will continue to use our Math Workshop where we have an opening, work time, and  closing.

During the opening we reviewed the standard, read the story problem, circled what was important, filled in our part part whole organizer, and wrote an equation. Then we worked through the problem together.  When we determined our answer we filled in the equation ask wrote a sentence.

Then they were off to work with their partners.

Lastly, we have our share time. Two students are able to show their work and answer questions from their classmates.
