Numbers 0, 1, 2, & 3

Today we began talking about how to represent numbers.  We will do this for numbers 0-20. We discuss how the number looks in a set, ten frame(or twenty frame), dot cube, place value, number line and the number word.

We started with the number 0 and 1. We filled out our anchor chart and then after work time, 2 students were able to share how they would represent their number.

To wrap up our week studying the letter M our mystery picture was a minion!   I loved creating this and the kids were SO excited when they realized what it was!

Representing Numbers 0-20

When each number is introduced we reviewed how to form that number and then what that number "looks like".   Each student is introduced to how to show that number in tally marks, place value, ten frames, drawing a set, and dot cubes.  They also were shown how to write the number word and how to tell if the word was even or odd.  Here are some exapmples of how your child will represent their number.   The first half of the page is for 0-10.  The bottom half is for 11-20.  CLICK ON LINK BELOW PICTURES FOR MY EXAMPLES :)

Numeracy Math Stations (2)


 
BUILDING NUMBER SENSE!!!
The foundation must be laid and hands on activities give the students the opportunity to build their number sense.

Roll the number cube and stack that many blocks.  The shelf liner really keeps the noise level down. 



Anytime I can use technology I do.  The students love it!  Sheppard's Software has some amazing games for numeracy.

 and letting the students use paper clips to represent the number. 
 This station will continue for a while.  The students enjoy playing with the Play Dough and my cards go up to 20! Love this one!

MATH, MATH, MATH

Math, Math, Math....I love teaching Math.  I never thought I would utter those words but I love it.  I love teaching the basics of Math.  Just like how the Phonological Continuum in Reading progresses with sounds and the manipulation of sounds before a letter is introduced, number concepts begin with sets and quantities before numbers are introduced. So what are the basics?
 
1. Children need to be able to look at a set and tell if it is <,>, or = to another set.
2. Children need to be able to count a set of objects and know that each item represents one number.
3. Children need to be able to count a set and when they finish know that the last number they said is the amount in their set.
4 &5.  Children need to not only be able to identify a number, they need to know that a number isn't just a digit, its a quantity.  They have to "see" a number as an amount.
6.  Children need to be able to look at a set and tell how many (or have counted that set already) and be able to continue counting. (Example, if a child counted 4 beads and then you hand them 3 more, they should be able to say I had 4 now I have 5,6,7.  I have 7 beads)
7. Children need to be able to see standard sets and know how much they.  (Ex, dice and domino dot patterns, playing card patterns)  *See link below
8. Children need to be able to state what is one more and one less than a given number.  As this skill progresses , 2 more and 2 less.
9. Children need to be able to make 5 and 10 quickly.  (Ex. If they have 4 apples, they need 6 more to have 10.  If they have 1 orange, they need 3 more to have 5)
10.Children need to be able to identify if they need to identify the whole in a word problem (addition) or a part (subtraction)

Math Stations for Numeracy

Common core states that the students will be able to write numbers and show how much that number represents (0-20).  Here are some stations that I have use.  My math stations are used for 2 weeks.

  Using a pipe cleaner and beads to represent the number 4. (great for fine motor skills too)
 
Forming the number 6 on a geo board

Using domino cards to practice one to one correspondence

Building Numbers/Numeracy

Lay the foundation for students by giving them every opportunity to develop number sense.  I use flash cards for a quick review.  Each number card is introduced as the number is introduced.  They are compiled and ...presto....a quick number sense routine.


 
 

 5 Frames. As I show the card I say "I have...." and they yell out the number.  Then I say "I need...." and they yell out how many more I need to get to 5.


These are my favorite!  How many students recount the fingers on their hands...every time?!?  LOTS so here are flash cards to help.  This is great for teaching counting on.  I used the die cut hand and folded the fingers down.
10 Frames. As I show the card I say "I have...." and they yell out the number.  Then I say "I need...." and they yell out how many more I need to get to 10. 
20 Frames. Same as above, as I show the card I say "I have...." and they yell out the number.  Then I say "I need...." and they yell out how many more I need to get to 20.  Counting on and decomposing numbers can be touch through repetition.
