Diagraphs

What is a diagraph?   A diagraph is when 2 or more letters come together to make one sound. We are focusing on the consonant diagraphs th, sh, and ch.
we talked about how l, unlike a blend, you don't hear the sounds individually.  They work together and make something new.  I used he illustration of white milk and chocolate syrup.  When mixed you don't see the white milk and you can't see the syrup but you get something different.

More Composing and Decomposing

As I stated last in my last composing and decomposing post. -----
What does it mean to compose and decompose numbers?   If you compose a number you out it together.  If you decompose a number you break it apart. Our  math standards state we can compose and decompose numbers 11-19.  Students must see one of these numbers as 10 and some more.  For example, the number 14 is 10 and 4 more. We would write that number sentence as 10+4=14.

This week we are using teen numbers and breaking the into 2 tens frames, place value, a number sentence, and words.

This is reinforced in math stations 😊

This is such a hard skill to learn but once the students have it, they seem not to struggle as much with number sense.

Blends

We have been working hard on hearing all the sounds on blends.  I kept tling them it was like chocolate/vanilla swirl ice cream.  When you say a blend you can hear both sounds they are just swirled together.   The same thing happens with the ice cream.  You can see both flavors but they are blended (swirled) together.

We brainstormed some blends and words that contained those blends.  Then we made a flip book.

This was so much fun!!!

 Station 4 - segmenting words
The picture cards have 2,3,4,or 5 sounds.  The color of the cards and segmenting blocks mat match. If a child has the blue cards, they use the blue mats to segment their words.

 Station 6 -Identifying  Ending sounds

 Station 7
iPads
Right now I am using Montessori crosswords

 Station 8- graphing Sight Words

MATH STATIONS!

I had to lower my number of stations this week. With everything going on 10 was a lot to get in. I went down to 8 and we will only be doing them Monday - Thursday.

Station 1  - Comparing numbers
Using 10 sided dice the students roll and the use the moveable rectangles to create a greater than, less than, or equal to sign.

 Station 2 -Building numbers
Using two - three 10 sided dice with dots the student determines how many dots there are all of ether and then builds the number using rods and singles.

Station 3 - representing teen numbers

Station 4
iPads - this makes it so easy to differentiate for each child.

 Station 5 - making 10

Thankfulness

Today we read Most Thankful Thing . I love this story. The child ask her mom what she is most thankful. The mom tells her to guess. She names all these wonderful things but doesn't guess correctly. Of course the mother's most thankful thing is her child.

After reading this we charted ~ I am thankful for... Each child received a piece of paper and wrote what they were most thankful for.

They then chose a "feather" and their writing will be part of our Thankful Kindergarten Turkey display.

                         (Sweet)

                      (Precious)

We also illustrated something/someone  we were thankful for in our poetry journals.
