Our Friday graphing lesson was so fun. We graphed the syllables in our names. Each student cameup and clapped the syllables for their name and then the whole class would clap. We put dots under the word parts and then placed it on our graph!

Syllables~ Word Parts
This week we have practiced syllables. We started by discussing that syllables or word parts are the "chunks" of a word. When we are trying to spell a long word we can "break" it into these part to help us hear each sound. When we are reading we can use the same strategy to decode the word. We have been counting the syllables is EVERYTHING this week.

The Flow of Reading
There is a progression of reading skills. Students must master each skill before they take on a new one. As adults, we take for granted a lot of these skills. They come so naturally to us that we do not even think the these skills may be diffucult for children.
Below you will see a flow chart that I have created to show the progression.
The first 7 skills can be practiced orally. A ride in the car or a walk around the neighborhood can be used to ask questions such as

Sight Words
Our school has 61 list (10 words per list). As students learn list 1-10, they are tested on phrases. List 11-61 require on the words to be read. In my room students move their "football" down the field for a touchdown! In Kindergarten, their goal is to complete the first 10 list.
The word wall is color coded for each list. List 1and 2 are yellow, 3 and 4 are green, 5 and 6 are orange, 7 and 8 are blue, 9 and 10 are read and 11-12 are purple. This allows the students to be able to find words on their list quickly. I have stars cut out all the colors and they are slowly added to the room. When they need to know how to spell one of their words or are reading or writing the room in stations, they know which words are theirs. I also have sight word poems on anchor charts that they are able to read during reading stations and they are color coded. This works wonderfully for differentiation.
