Thanksgiving break

I hope all of you enjoy your Thanksgiving break!

Our Feast


We had our feast today but we had our school lunchroom turkey and dressing day Wednesday so we were able to dress up twice.  Each child was able to choose if they wanted to be a pilgrim or a Native Americans on Wednesday. If they chose pilgrim on Wednesday they would be a Native American on Friday and vice  versa.  They loved it!  I picked out Native American names that fit their personality and they were able to paint their symbols on them.

Thanksgiving

We learned more about pilgrims this week.  Specifically, pilgrim children.  We wanted to see how their life and our lives were the same and how they were different.  We read Pilgrim Children had many Chores and then filled out a graphic organizer comparing the life of a child then to the life of a child now.  

Then we wrote If I were a pilgrim boy/girl I would_____.



Next we read If You Were At The First Thanksgiving and sequenced 4 events in the story and wrote a sentence to match each event. 






We had to have a little fun with Turkeys!   We read The Great Turkey Race and wrote about our favorite part.  We made this precious turkey that one of my amazing team mates saw on Pinterest. They turned out so cute!

Spelling with C and K


So here is the rule ...you spell the /c/ sound with a c if it is followed by a,o,u, and any consonants
You use a k if it is followed by e,i, or y

This works most of the time but there are ALWAYS exceptions to the rule. (Ex. Kangaroo) 

So we sing (to the tune of Wgere is Thumpkin)
The k has 3 friends, the K has 3 friends: e,I, and y.     e, i, and y.

The Mayflower

Today we talked about the Mayflower.  Most of the kids already knew it was a ship. Some said the Native Americans were on it and others said pilgrims. We skimmed through facts from ...If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620.  
We found out some pretty cool facts.  
*There were 102 Pilgrims on the ship (  that is close to how many Kindergartners we have)


*They could only take 1 chest filled with their belongings. If it didn't fit, they had to leave it.

We made a Mayflower and wrote something the pilgrims took with them. 



*They ate (what the sailors called) hardtack (hard biscuit) and salt horse (salted beef).  

I asked " Could you have survived by eating this on the Mayflower ?"   Most said yes so we decided...well I decided..they would try hardtack and salt horse. They were not thrilled about it.  They said, "Eeewww! What is it?  Do we really have to eat it?   It sounds gross? " 


Now of course I didn't tell them it was beef jerky and a roll. 



We then graphed our responses. 





Our mystery picture was so much fun this week.  We started our 100 chart. Usually my picture has something to do with the letter of the week.  I tricked them this week 😊

After such a fun week, I couldn't believe my little Auburn fan came in wearing his Auburn shirt.    I am trying my best to convert him!!

Native Americans

This week we began talking about the Native  Americans.  We began by discussing the Native Americans that were around when the pilgrims did not have an alphabet.  They used pictures to tell stories.  




Then we made buckskins and tepees and drew Native American Symbols on them. 





Next we read, Squanto and theFirst  Thanksgiving.  

 
We talked about how he taught the pilgrims to grow their crops.  We then "planted our own corn". We put a corn seed ( candy corn) in dirt (chocolate pudding) and then added the fish to help it grow (Swedish Fish).  








We did some work and then went to lunch.  When we came back, CORN HAD GROWN!   Amazing 😊 





We then made our necklaces, headbands, and our vests for our feast.
